As a companion piece to the one-day itinerary of things to do in Portland Maine, I wanted to curate a list of where to stay in Portland. There are a number of wonderful hotels, inns, and B&Bs; some of which are the best places to stay in Portland Maine!
I found Portland to be such a charming and walkable city, that I’d recommend staying near the Old Port or in South Portland so you can walk to all of the great restaurants and shops. Hotels in South Portland Maine are a great option if you want to be away from the bustle of the port and obtain more budget-friendly Portland accommodation.
This is my list of top hotels based on things I personally find important like ease of parking, location, free perks like breakfast, dog friendly hotels, swank lobbies, friendliness of the staff, and comfy rooms. The Portland Harbor Hotel is the only AAA rated 4 diamond hotel in Old Port. On site they boast a Four-Star restaurant with 24 hour room service, 24 hour valet parking, a spa on the property, and a full fitness center. They also offer free wifi and are pet friendly. The rooms have been recently renovated with a sleek coastal vibe.

Hyatt Place Portland – Old Port offers water views of the city, and a perfect option if you’re looking for Old Port hotels. We are loyal members of Hyatt, and both use the rewards credit card regularly to rack up points. The Hyatt earns rave reviews for its walkable location and proximity to world-class restaurants.

Howard Johnson Hotel by Wyndham South Portland is a much more affordable option for a hotel in South Portland Maine. Amenities include an indoor pool and workout room, and as a bonus there’s a free breakfast!

Tru by Hilton Portland Airport Area is one of the newest hotels in South Portland Maine. It’s earning rave reviews from guest for its reasonable prices, “Build Your Own Breakfast” options, and proximity to Maine attractions. There’s even self-serve laundry on site, as well as a pool table!
